Escaping Violence and Abuse: a New Model for Refuge Provision

April marked our two-year milestone of providing the escaping violence and abuse (EVA) project at Harbour Housing.

EVA acts as an innovative hybrid between a traditional refuge space and a complex needs accommodation facility, ensuring that survivors of abuse with additional needs such as mental health issues, disability, pet ownership or addiction struggles can access safety and support.

Police and Crime Commissioner Hustings

We were pleased to be able to host a virtual hustings event for the Devon and Cornwall police and crime commissioner elections.

The event, hosted via Zoom webinar, was held last week and saw candidates Alison Hernandez, Brian Blake, Gareth Derrick and Stuart Jackson each promote their vision for policing in the South West.

Covid Vaccination Day

Our residents have received their first dose of the Covid vaccine after we held our very own ‘vaccine day’ at Cosgarne Hall.

Dr Clare Taylor and Lisa Pearson from St Austell Healthcare set up in our dedicated facility for visiting health professionals and provided the first dose of the vaccine to 34 residents.

Penzance Community Testing Day

THE Harbour Housing community outreach vehicle, affectionately known as Winnie, was out in Penzance this week helping with community testing.

A pop up site was set up at St John’s Hall for the day where individuals could access testing for Covid-19 as well as blood borne viruses (BBV). The event was promoted to those in the area living in temporary or insecure housing, as well as those rough sleeping.

Health Protections Against Covid-19 for Staff and Clients

People with a history of homelessness are at a high clinical risk of developing severe illness from Covid-19 as they are more likely to suffer from long term health complications such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cardiac problems and be immunocompromised.

Christmas Heroes – Portuguese Restaurant Newquay

Residents at Harbour Housing were lucky enough to be treated to a professionally cooked meal on Christmas Day.

On 25th December 2020 staff from the Portuguese Restaurant Newquay gave up their day to come and cook for those who would be staying with us over the Christmas period.

Hypnotherapy at Harbour

Harbour recently took on our own counselling service for beneficiaries who have experienced homelessness and are working to develop their independence. This was after we put a survey to residents asking them if they felt they would benefit from this: the result a resounding ‘yes!’
